Skegness Contemporary Arts
and Craft Fair
About the Organisers: May
Jones and Malcolm Tait are two practicing artists based in the Skegness
area. May who works primarily in collage and painting has been practicing
for four years, Malcolm who works in painting, 3-D and installation has been
practicing for eight years.
About the Fair: Our aim is
simply to develop a professional event in a busy coastal tourist resort
which displays contemporary art and craft in a relaxed and enjoyable
setting. Our target for the first year is 50 exhibitors and a throughput of
5000 visitors over the weekend.
About the Audience: This is
the first time the event has been held and it is aimed at two audiences. The
first is the large number of visitors to the tourist destination of
Skegness, the population of Skegness in winter is approx 16,000 during the
summer months this rises to approx. 120,000 as static and touring caravan
owners decamp to the many caravan sites in and around the town, people rent
one of the many thousands of static caravans on the sites, and weekend
visitors come to enjoy many of the local attractions. These attractions
include a wonderful large sandy beach, Bottons fairground, the imposing
Fantasy Island with two immense roller-coasters, fish and chip shops and
other traditional pastimes. There are also brand new arcades with the latest
video games machines, the large Embassy Theatre and also the nature reserve
at Gibraltar Point. These are a few of the attractions that draw people to
the region and whilst not all of the 100,000 people that arrive here every
week during the summer will be attracted to craft fairs we believe there is
a growing percentage with good disposable incomes that will be attracted to
such an event. The second audience we will target with our advertising will
be the substantial audience for similar events already in the region.
About the setting: The
Welcome Inn is set on a large triangular plot of land on one of the two main
roads into Skegness; it holds an extremely prominent position on a main set
of traffic lights as travellers arrive into Skegness. The Welcome is not new
to such events and also hosts a Cider Festival which attracts four thousand
visitors each year.
Event Advertising: The
event will be listed in many art and craft publications and websites, there
will be a concerted press release campaign in the East Midlands press and on
local radio. A large leaflet and poster campaign will be rolled out in the
two months running up to the event. Six large banners will advertise the
event to the weekly 100,000 visitors that visit Skegness in the three weeks
running up to the event.
Event Times:
Set up will be on Friday Afternoon between 2.00pm and
6.00pm

will Open 10.30am Close 7.00pm
